Excavation

During the course of research excavations in the inner enclosure at Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----) this rectangular rock-cut pit (D 0.25m) was revealed. It had vertical sides and a flat floor. A narrow funnel-like extension (L 1.3m) ran off it at SE. The charcoal-flecked clay fill contained sheep, cattle and pig bones. Finds included a small amount of abraded cooking ware, a bone point, one broken and one complete bone needle, a fragment of a clay mould and a piece of pumice. A sample of animal bone yielded a radiocarbon date of 1370-1120 cal. BC. The pit was partly sealed by the remains of possible wall foundations that extended off it at W and ran under the foundations of the inner enclosure wall (Cotter 2012, vol. 1, 317-18).
