Ernest Shackleton

Kilkea Castle in County Kildare, Ireland, is the birthplace of Ernest Shackleton, who joined Scott's Discovery expedition in 1901 and later led the Endurance crew across stormy oceans after their ship sank in 1915. He died in 1922 and rests in Grytviken, South Georgia, while the lost Endurance emerged from Antarctic waters a century later. The castle has no polar chamber or public shrine, but it is the quiet starting point of a life that kept returning to the edge of the world.
