In pasture, immediately W of townland boundary with Athalacca North and 450m E of the River Maigue, an enclosure (LI039-009---) lies 250m to the NE. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as an oval-shaped platform (diam. c. 100m NE-SW) defined by a scarp, intersected at N and SW by post-1700 field boundaries running NE-SW. Partially levelled monument shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map where a section of the curving bank is shown with hachures from N-W only where the bank intersects with the townland boundary running N-S. The curving form of the townland boundary from E to SSE incorporates the original enclosing bank of the large enclosure. The bank has been removed from SW-W-NW where it has been replaced by a straight sided post-1700 field boundary forming a D-shaped enclosure visible on OSi aerial imagery. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded this monument as ‘a large fort of uncommon size called Glenma Fort’ (OSNB Abbeyfeale to Bruree, 138). Monument visible as a D-shaped area (dims. c. 85m N-S; 83m E-W) with straight side at W enclosed by a tree-covered bank, incorporated into townland boundary from E-SE on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12. Modern gap in bank at N. Monument clearly visible on aerial photographs (ASIAP (322) 6, 7) taken 05/10/2002 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
See attached Google Earth orthoimages and ASIAP aerials.
