Enclosure

Located on a shelf at the bottom of the N-facing slope of Slieve na Calliagh ridge. This is a large, originally circular but now D-shaped, and grass-covered area with rock outcrop (int. dims 102m E-W; c. 70m NW-SE) which is defined by a grass-covered stony scarp (H c. 1m) that is incorporated into a field wall at E. It is best preserved where it emerges from this wall on the N side and is visible as a stone spread (Wth 4m; H 0.8m) with some large stones. The only entrance is a gap (Wth 10m) at W. The enclosure is truncated by a NE-SW field wall at S and is not visible S of this feature. Field walls of the field system (ME009-045----) overlie the interior. The cashel (ME09-046----) is c. 10m to the N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
