Enclosure in Trienearagh

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Trienearagh was a children's burial ground in County Kerry, marked on maps from 1841 to 1939 before a plough erased it in the 1940s. Only a shallow six-by-four-metre depression remains, yet the loss feels sudden because the place was small enough to overlook and sacred enough to remember. Forgetting it requires turning soil over repeatedly; remembering it requires stopping beside an ordinary field and asking what the field took.
Marked on the 1841-42 and 1939 OS map as 'Killeen Children's Burial Ground' and noted as 'disused' in 1939, it was completely ploughed out in the 1940s. Only a slight depression measuring 6m x 4m is now visible. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 867. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
