Enclosure in Oldcastle

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Associated with a motte and bailey (GA096-144----). Orpen (1916, 39-40) recorded what seemed to be 'another enclosure … 38 paces' to the E of the fosse of the motte. It was defined by 'a ditch, 12 feet [3.6m] wide, running right across the esker' and 'traces of a rampart and ditch' joined 'this ditch with the mote at the S. side and more faintly at the N'. The latter features were '38 paces' apart. The enclosure is not shown on his plan. On inspection in June 1982 this feature was not noted and it is not visible on aerial imagery. Not precisely located. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 11 December 2019
