Enclosure in Kilweelran — Report the wrong picture

Kilweelran held four ancient forts spaced eight chains apart, a deliberate line across open pasture that suggested ceremony rather than casual defence. The enclosure near the children’s burial ground may have marked a boundary between the living and the dead, or a place where families gathered before journeying into darkness. Its shallow scarp still curves through the grass, waiting to be read by someone who walks slowly enough to hear it.

On level improved and cleared pastureland c. 60m SE of a children’s burial ground (CL006-003001-). Hachured as a complete enclosure on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a partial enclosure on the 1915 ed. The only potentially associated surface expression is a low arcing scarp. The OS parish namebooks for Kilweelran in 1839 (Placenames database of Ireland) list four ancient forts in the townland ‘standing in a direct line from east towards N. west about 8 chains [c. 160m] apart’.
