Enclosure in Kilgulbin West

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Kilgulbin West contains two vanished ringforts named for Seonac, marked only on old surveys while the grass and rocks keep the shape hidden. The land may have held lamps, children and argument beside the rocky outcrop, yet no wall or gate remains for a stranger to touch. Memory, not stone, carries the homestead now.
Ballinhonick Forts/Liosanna Bhaile Sheonaic (ringfort of the homestead of Seonac - personal name) is situated NE of a rocky outcrop and lies immediately S of (752). This circular enclosure appears on the 1841-42 and 1898 OS maps. However, no surface trace survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 751. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
