Enclosure in Kilfintan Lower OR Crancam — Report the wrong picture

Kilfintan Lower holds a rectangular enclosure on the highest point of a Longford ridge, overlooking every valley below. People built a low stone bank and shallow ditch around open ground, perhaps for ceremony, residence or exclusion. Farming later swallowed the entrance and straightened part of the boundary, yet the shape still resists forgetting.

On the highest point of a prominent NW-SE ridge in pasture. Extensive views are afforded in all directions. A raised subrectangular area (50.4m NW-SE; 41.7m NE-SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.9m; H 0.9m max.) with a largely infilled, shallow external fosse (Wth c. 4.2m; D 0.2m). From WNW-N-E the bank and fosse have been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
