Enclosure in Gortnacrusha South

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Gortnacrusha South holds a ghost oval, thirty-nine metres long and thirty-two wide, lying immediately southwest of a possible rath. The earth has forgotten its own boundary, hiding the ditch beneath grass and soil until storm rains or heavy machinery reveals the arc again. What is absent there is not empty; it is waiting to be remembered. A person who walks the field at dusk may feel the shape before seeing it, because the land still carries the pressure of the hole dug long before written record.
Immediately SW of a possible rath (CO124-063----). An E-N arc of a possible univallate oval enclosure (c. 39m N-S; c. 32m E-W) is visible as a cropmark in an aerial photograph (CUCAP, BGP 57). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
