Enclosure in Fosterstown South

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Fosterstown South holds a D-shaped enclosure thirty metres across, joined twenty metres northeast by a larger circle and a figure-of-eight kiln beside a ditch. The Metro North project forced geophysical surveys and test pits onto the land, pulling ancient boundaries back into modern awareness. People may have dried corn, marked territory or simply lived inside those curves before the road was dreamed.
An irregular shaped enclosure visible as a crop mark on an aerial photograph together with other features. A circular enclosure (DU011-116----) and field system (DU011-117----) are located close to the north (SMR file; pers. comm. T. Condit). This site was subject to geophysical survey (08R117) and test excavation (09E 0466) as part of the proposed Metro North development. A possible D-shaped enclosure (30m diam.) was identified. An additional enclosure was identified 20 m to the northeast, possibly enclosing an area measuring 50 m in diameter. A figure-of-eight shaped corn drying kiln was identified directly north of a ditch feature which may have had a relationship with either enclosure (Hession 2009, 36).
