Enclosure in Crean (smallcounty By.)

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Crean is a D-shaped earthwork on flat pasture in County Limerick, marked by a fosse and western bank. It sits 540m east of the Ballintaw boundary, 390m from Crean church and graveyard, and 200m from a ringfort. The shape is absent from historic maps but clear in aerial images, suggesting people lived or worked there before written records noticed.
On flat pasture 540m E of the townland boundary with Ballintaw. Crean church (LI031-091001) and graveyard (LI031-091002-) are located 390m to WSW, ringfort (LI031-189----) located 200m to SE. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 as a D-shaped enclosure (ext. dims. c. 67m N-S; 53m E-W) surrounded by a fosse and external bank on the W side. The earthworks that define the site on the other sides consist of a fosse. Small relic field boundaries link the site into the surrounding existing field boundaries on the N and S. Identified by ASI aerial photographic survey 2002 (ASIAP (307) 27 and 28) as an enclosure. The site is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 16/03/2016; 28/06/2018 and 24/09/2018. See attached ASI survey image showing the enclosure and Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 8 October 2020
