What is recorded here

Coolyhune is in County Carlow and kept a small rectangular enclosure inside a bank. The 1839 map measured it at thirty to forty metres, while the 1874 map called it a fort. Nothing obvious remains except a field boundary that may still hide part of its north side. That much is known; the rest belongs to the ground.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as small rectangular enclosure defined by bank (max. dims. c. 30m NE-SW, 40m NW-SE). Marked 'Site of Fort' on 1874 OS 6" map. No visible surface trace although field boundary (earthen with drystone facing) may incorporate portion of N side of former monument.
