What is recorded here

Clearing stripped Coolnamara and revealed a shallow dish instead of a hidden chamber. The enclosure may have marked a household, a boundary or a forgotten ritual place, yet no wall, gate or broken vessel remains to answer. Its name still belongs to the land, but the meaning has thinned until only shape and suspicion are left behind.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Site known in local tradition as 'rath'. Cleared and levelled recently. Slight rise, possibly an outcrop, visible.
