Enclosure in Carrowkeel (tirerrill By., Templevanny Ed) is an enclosure in Carrowkeel (tirerrill By., Templevanny Ed), County Sligo, Ireland. It is a circular area 19m wide cut into the steep NE-facing slope of the Bricklieve Mountains. An arc of scarp and a slight rise define the upslope side, while another scarp merges with the abrupt natural slope elsewhere. The enclosure overlooks a rectangular enclosure and two raths on the ridge above.
In pasture, at a slight break in the steep NE-facing slope of the Bricklieve Mountains. A circular area (19m NW-SE) cut into the slope of a ridge. On the upslope side WSW-NNW, the interior is defined by an arc of NE-facing scarp (H 0.6m) cut into the slope, from NNW-NNE by a slight rise (Wth c. 2m; H c. 0.5m) and elsewhere by a NE-facing scarp that merges NE-ENE with an abrupt and very steep natural slope. The interior slopes markedly reflecting the natural slope; a field boundary crosses the S edge. The enclosure overlooks a rectangular enclosure (SL040-033001-) and a rath (SL040-034----) c. 350m and 200m to NNE respectively and a second rath (SL040-037----) c. 450m to ESE.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
