Enclosure in Carrickagarvan

Situated at the E edge of a shelf on a slight NE-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’ is depicted only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Slight traces of an oval enclosure (dims 32m N-S; 21m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1m; H 0.5m) E-SW-NW were visible in 1984, but there was no visible fosse or identifiable entrance. The enclosure had been removed in a quarry by 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
