Enclosure in Caherloghan — Report the wrong picture

Caherloghan holds an oval enclosure twenty-eight metres wide on a limestone ridge, its bank still standing half a metre high beside a children’s burial ground. The shape is not a vague memory but a deliberate boundary, cutting across pasture and time. It may have marked a home, a shrine or a place where the living kept distance from the dead. In any case, the stones still draw a line the land has not forgotten.

On the level plateau of a limestone ridge, in lush pasture. Depicted on the OS 25-inch map and 1921 edition of the OS 6-inch map as an oval enclosure which is truncated across the WSW sector by a linear field boundary (long-axis NW-SE). An oval area (28m E-W; 24m N-S) defined by a bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m; Wth at top 3.1m; overall Wth 10.15m) SE-S and W-NE, which is reduced to a scarp SW-W and levelled NE-ESE. The bank is best preserved SE-S. There is a dense clump of briars which obscures the enclosing elements at ESE. The interior is generally level. A well-defined curvilinear field bank (C c. 40m) extends from the monument at WNW and encloses its northern side and the children’s burial ground (CL035-041----) which is c. 25m to NE at its closest point.
