What is recorded here
Westropp called it a square cattle bawn, but the earth and stone still shape a small subcircular platform in the rough pasture. It sits within older field systems on outcropping limestone, near another enclosure to the northeast, as if several generations had drawn borders around the same living land. The missing parts do not diminish it; they remind us that enclosure is not a wall of pride but a invitation to notice what people kept safe, held back or forgot.
In rough pasture and outcropping limestone pavement, within a relict field system (CL008-004001-) and a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). This is possibly the fort described by Westropp (1905, 357) as being ‘square about 60 feet each way of large but late-looking masonry, and probably, an old cattle-bawn.’ Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). This small subcircular platform (c. 20m E-W; 16m N-S) is defined by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.2m; H 0.25m), except at E, W and NW where only a scarp (H 0.5m) remains. A W and NW the platform rises up to 1m above the the outer ground level but this is partly due to the natural slope of the land. There is another enclosure (CL008-128----) c. 50m to the NE. (Robinson 1977).
