What is recorded here

Enclosure in Ballynakill, County Carlow, is a vanished rath that once stood seventy metres across, but now hides inside an ordinary field boundary. The 1839 map still marks the site of Rath, yet no wall or ditch remains visible to test that memory. Perhaps the land swallowed the landmark while people kept living beside it, trusting the line in the soil more than they trusted their own eyes.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked 'Site of Rath' and depicted as large slightly oval enclosure on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map (max. diam. c. 70m). Very small portion of bank at NE is preserved in field boundary at SW; irregularity in field boundary probably reflects former presence of bank. No other visible surface traces.
