What is recorded here

Ballyellin and Tomdarragh hold a forgotten circular enclosure, perhaps a ringfort, now hidden beneath grass and memory. It stretched forty metres across when last drawn, large enough for a family, a herdsman, or a small defiant community. The land keeps its shape even when people stop seeing it, suggesting that enclosure is not a wall but a promise to return.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as circular enclosure (max. diam. c. 40m). No visible surface traces. Possibly a ringfort.
