Enclosure in Ballyellin AND Tomdarragh

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ballyellin and Tomdarragh preserve a broken circular bank beside a shallow ditch, occupying a flat forty-metre rise above the surrounding land. The remaining half-enclosure suggests a large ringfort, though its interior has faded into an ordinary open field. It is not a grand ruin or easily identifiable building; it is a displaced shape of soil, waiting for imagination to complete its missing boundary.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 S half of circular enclosure with bank and external fosse shown on 1908 'OS 6-inch' map. Sited on top of rise. Flat level area (diam. 40m) indicates location of former site, which may have been a large ringfort.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
