Ballyellin and Tomdarragh preserve a broken circular bank beside a shallow ditch, occupying a flat forty-metre rise above the surrounding land. The remaining half-enclosure suggests a large ringfort, though its interior has faded into an ordinary open field. It is not a grand ruin or easily identifiable building; it is a displaced shape of soil, waiting for imagination to complete its missing boundary.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Flat level area (diam. 40m) indicates location of former site, which may have been a large ringfort.
