What is recorded here

Enclosure in Ballintober, rosmeen is an enclosure in Ballintober, rosmeen, County Roscommon, Ireland. Geophysical surveys completed in 2008 and 2009 identified a circular feature roughly forty-five metres across inside the castle ward. The enclosure probably existed before the castle, although radar evidence did not confirm that timing.
Within the rectangular ward of Ballintober Castle (RO027-048002-). Resistivity, gradiometry and ground penetrating radar surveys (08R262) conducted inside and outside the castle by Target Archaeological Geophysics on behalf of the Ballintober Community Group and funded by the Heritage Council during 2008 and 2009 produced exciting results, which are largely at a depth of 0.6-1.6m. There is evidence of an enclosure (diam. c. 45m) centred on a point inside the E castle wall S of the gateway in the form of a discontinuous fosse feature SW-N. This feature probably pre-dates the castle but is not confirmed by GPR (Nicholls 2008; 2009). Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of upload: 30th August, 2010.
