What is recorded here
An Mhuiríoch is a square enclosure in South Kerry where a hidden opening still points toward the sea. The bank stands half a man high, narrow enough to walk but tall enough to watch the river valley. The central platform and broken edge suggest the site was built for observation, not decoration.
This site, known locally as 'The Turret', is marked on the first edition of the OS map as a circular enclosure. It is located in pasture on the S side of the Inny estuary and affords a lengthy view up the river valley to NE. The present remains consist of a bank enclosing a roughly square depression, 9.9m N-S x 10.1m E-W. The flat-topped bank of earth and gravel rises .8m above external ground level, averages 2.5m wide and falls 2m to the interior. A possible entrance gap, 1.1m wide, occurs in the bank at NE. Centrally positioned within the interior of the site is a low, overgrown, stony platform, 2.3m x 2m in overall dimensions, and at SE is a shallow, inaccessible opening, at least 2m wide and .3m high, which appears to extend to SE.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1482. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
