Embanked enclosure

Situated at the N edge of a plateau overlooking the Blackwater river valley to the N with the W-E river c. 1.7km to the N. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 64m E-W; 62m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 2m at N (downslope) to 1.5m at S), with an outer round-bottomed fosse (Wth at base c. 3m; ext. D 0.5-1m) and outer scrub-covered bank (Wth 4m; max. ext. H 0.5m) NW-NE. Tobar Mocuda, which was venerated in May until the late 19th century (OS Name Books), is a pond (diam. 3.5m; D 0.5m) adjacent to the NW, but 'St Carthage's Stone Altar' which is described as a piece of masonry outside the bank at N (ibid.) can no longer be found.
