Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Rockland, County Roscommon, Ireland. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map marked a circular embanked enclosure thirty to thirty-five metres wide on a shelf at the west foot of Sheep Hill. The earthworks no longer show in the pasture, but a ring barrow stands one hundred metres to the east.
Marked only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30-35m), and situated on a shelf at the W foot of Sheep Hill. It is not visible at ground level in pasture but was probably a rath. Ring-barrow (RO051-022----) is c. 100m to the E. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
