Elizabeth Rebecca Edwin was born around 1771 in County Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of actor William Talbot Richards and an unknown mother. She stood on the Crow Street Theatre stage at eight years old, playing juvenile roles in works like Prince Arthur and a lost farce called The Female Club. She acted across Ireland and England until 1854, marrying John Edwin the younger and continuing to perform in comedy and farce until his suicide in Dublin in 1805.
