Castle Hillock is a medieval motte and bailey where a natural mound was probably levelled into a defensive platform for the Stirlings or Strivelyns of Glenesk. The bailey stretched beside a deep ravine and ditched boundaries, while vaulted chambers were removed in the late 18th century. The site may have remained occupied until Edzell Castle was built, leaving behind a broad grassy knoll, faint ditch marks and a local story about a fatal pit hidden in the wet moat.
