What is recorded here

Edward Sabine arrived in County Dublin in October 1788 to become the ninth child of a visiting Anglo-Irish family, yet his mother died before he finished his first month. He left that cramped birthplace for the royal military academy and later the frozen Arctic, carrying a young mind shaped by brotherly conversations about birds and earth. The boy who lost his mother in a strange city became the president who taught the world to measure its own hidden magnetic fields.

Why this person is known: British Army general (1788-1883)
