This blue commemorative plaque records: Edward Knowles (1839-1873) Captain of the frigate Northfleet, holed off Dungeness by the Spanish steamer Murillo in January 1873. He and 239 others went down with the ship. His parents were schoolmaster and mistress here during the 1860s, 70s and 80s Recorded plaque organisation: Hartford Civic Society.
Captain Edward Knowles commanded the frigate Northfleet which sank after being holed by the Spanish steamer Murillo in January 1873; he perished along with 239 others, remembered for his service and sacrifice in a significant naval incident of the era.
