Edward Dodwell was born in County Dublin on 30 November 1767, the starting point for a life spent painting Greek ruins and writing about them before dying in Rome in 1832. He travelled through Greece between 1801 and 1806, then settled mostly in Italy, where an illness from a later trip to the Sabine Mountains finally took him. His widow, thirty years his junior, went on to become a notable figure in papal political life.
