This black commemorative plaque records: Edward Cockey & Sons 1816-1960 Iron Foundry & gas industry pioneers. Edward Cockey introduced gas lighting to Frome in 1831. His foundry was on this site by the 1840s, manufacturing gas components and cast iron street furniture, including columns for the new gas lamps. This frontage dates to c. 1860, by which time the first employed over 150 people. Recorded plaque organisation: Frome and District Civic Society, Frome Society for Local Study.
Edward Cockey was a pioneering figure in the gas industry who introduced gas lighting to Frome in 1831; his family's foundry, established by the 1840s and employing over 150 people by the 1860s, manufactured essential components for gas infrastructure and cast iron street furniture.
