Marian and her husband ran a small guesthouse two streets from the castle. They showed visitors the Portcullis Gate and Argyle Tower, then walked them home through markets still wet from rain. People came from far away because the city kept giving itself up in little pieces: a stair, a kitchen smell, a room where light arrived late.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh Castle, Portcullis Gate and Argyle Tower as Gateway (16th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Edinburgh Castle was originally built by the Kingdom of Scotland in the 12th century, with significant additions including the Portcullis Gate and Argyle Tower constructed in the 16th century. It is important as a historic military stronghold and symbol of Scottish heritage, dominating the skyline of Edinburgh and housing the Scottish Crown Jewels.
