Saint Cummin Fada founded the Glebe church around 661 after leaving Clonfert, becoming abbot of a small community that likely prayed, argued and tended fields beside the Shannon. His defence of the Roman liturgy against the Celtic school still survives in his Paschal epistle, suggesting the site was never merely quiet but a place where doctrine was sharpened. The church may have felt lively and contentious, with monks debating Easter dates while ordinary people listened, remembered and carried the dispute home.

The foundation of this site is attributed to Saint Cummin Fada (d. 661-2). He entered Clonfert monastery Co. Galway and subsequently established a foundation here where he became abbot. Cummian was a stout defender of the Roman liturgy against the Celtic school and his Paschal epistle is still extant (Cummian's Letter: De controversia Paschali.
