Earthwork in Rorardstown Upper

Situated on high ground in an upland area with extensive views. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'stump of a castle ruined' (Simington, 1931, vol. 1, 62). Philip Purcell listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). All that remains are the low, barely discernible outline of scattered and confused earthen banks which may be easier to interpret from an aerial photograph..
