Earthwork in Newtown (coshlea By.)

Earthwork

What is recorded here

A possible levelled ringfort lies hidden in pasture beside Duntryleague, visible only in 1984 aerial photographs rather than modern satellite images. That disappearance suggests ordinary life, ploughing or forgetting erased a place people once shaped with their hands.
In pasture, 15m W of townland boundary with Duntryleague. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Circular feature identified as a possible levelled ringfort on Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline aerial photographs (BGE 1/5000 Site 142; Strip Map 3 Site 3/30) taken 03/11/1984. No surface remains visible on the Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13. Faint trace of possible feature visible on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached BGE location map and Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 21 September 2021
