To the N of the castle (OF001-002001-) are a pair of shallow fosses running on an E/W axis. These were probably the outer defences of the Plantation Castle. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
