Mounds and ditches marked a fortified place in Maghereagh before destruction erased most of its shape. Corcoran recorded a fort at the site, yet only a faint grassmark remains for anyone walking past to imagine. The earth kept the boundary long enough for memory, then released it back to grass and rain.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Corcoran (CLAJ 1931, 383, 385) states that a 'fort' existed at this site at one time. Fort destroyed but traceable as a grassmark.
