What is recorded here
Kilfane Demesne holds two rectangular earth enclosures, one inside the other, beside the church and quarry. They appeared as cropmarks after tillage, suggesting deliberate boundaries rather than random field edges. The nesting shape implies a place set apart for ritual, residence or exclusion, yet no surviving name explains the purpose.
In a large field immediately W of Kilfane church (KK028-013001-) and graveyard (KK028-013003-) and W, SW and S of a quarry which is indicated on the revision of the OS 6-inch map and OS 25-inch map immediately NW of the church. A number of earthen banks are visible on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BGK083, 17 July 1971), consisting of a rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 75m N-S; c. 50m E-W), c. 30m W of the quarry, within a larger rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 105m N-S; c. 60m E-W), with other banks running W and S of the larger enclosure. OSI satellite imagery from 1996-2000 shows the field under tillage and the enclosures are clearly visible as cropmarks on the 2006-2012 imagery.
