Earthwork in Kedrah

On the crest of a ridge running roughly N-S. Land rises to the SE and slopes to the NW. Surrounded by pasture. On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map it is depicted as a slightly oval enclosure, on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. it is depicted as an oval mound (diam. c. 40m NNE-SSW; c. 32m ESE-WNW); fosse (Wth c. 4-7.5m) and outer bank. The earthwork has been fenced off and is very heavily overgrown with scrub. It consists of a large flat-topped mound (overall diam. c. 53m ESE-WNW) with a berm on the S side. Below the berm the mound falls in a steep scarp (H 2.6m over 5.6m) with stone protruding. There may be a bank along the S edge at the top of the mound. Difficult monument to classify due to overgrowth but it is definitely not a ringfort. According to the NMI Topographical Files an E-ware rim sherd was found 'in the eroded bank of a ringfort' at these co-ordinates. This type of pottery dates to the 7th/8th century A. D.
