What is recorded here
Duffus Castle is one of Scotland's largest surviving Norman mottes, where a man-made mound still carries the weight of six centuries of revolt, occupation and forgetting. Freskin raised the first wood-and-earth stronghold for David I, later Cheyne hands answered English crowns and Scottish swords, and the stone keep rose through marriage, war and the quiet arithmetic of inheritance. Even in ruin the place remains generous: green hills for children, grass for picnics, and a medieval bridge for anyone willing to walk beside what power once believed permanent.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Duffus Castle as Unidentified Object(s) (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Duffus Castle was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the Keith family, a powerful noble lineage in medieval Scotland. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in Moray and as the site of a significant battle in 1307 during the Wars of Scottish Independence, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
