Six fishermen from Trá Ruaim drowned in Dunmanus Bay on September 20th 1899. Charles Coughlan, Thomas Spillane, John McCarthy, Patrick O'Donovan and brothers Eugene and Charles McCarthy joined the water and did not return. Their names still stand together on the memorial, remembering the men the bay took.
