Dromore Castle rose from a small island in Dromore Lake, its limestone walls marking the power of the Earls of Thomond before water retreat and human neglect turned the island into ordinary woodland. Teige, second son to Connor, third earl of Thomond, and Slany Brien are named on an inscription stone above the front door, anchoring the ruin to a family that switched sides during war and abandoned the place in 1689. The surviving chamber, guard-room, garderobe and crenellated parapet still suggest a home built for pride as much as defence, while the lost upper floors leave room for imagination about the people who lived inside.
