Dowhill Castle rose around 1500 as a stone tower house above Loch Leven, where the Lindsay family lived until legal losses forced them to sell. William Adam later housed labourers inside the building instead of enjoying it as a gentleman’s residence, and Robert Adam may have taken its shape into his own castle designs. Nineteenth-century quarrymen removed much of the upper work, leaving two floors to lean against the hill while the lost rooms disappear into rain and memory.
