Douglas House

Detached house, built c. 1790, comprising three-bay two-storey block with attic, having pediments to front and rear elevations, multiple-bay latter elevation, with lower two-bay two-storey addition to east end, single-bay three-storey addition to east end of rear elevation, and recent flat-roofed extension to rear. Pitched roof to main pedimented block, flat-roofed to east and rear additions, with rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls, with rendered string course at first floor sills level to all of front elevation, moulded course over upper floor of east addition, and render surrounds to all front windows. Oculus to front pediment, having cut limestone surround and spoked window. Round-headed window opening to rear pedimented part, having margined nine-over-six pane timber sliding sash window, with limestone sill. Square-headed openings elsewhere to rear elevation, having nine-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows to east elevation and similar ones to rear addition but margined and having moulded surrounds. Segmental-headed door opening to front elevation with render cornice, atop fluted keystone and partly fluted Doric-style pilasters, with replacement timber door with glazed surround. Limestone steps to entrance. Multiple-bay lofted single-storey outbuilding to north having pitched slate roof and brick chimneystack, coursed limestone rubble walls, and square-headed window and square-headed and segmental-arched door openings with brick surrounds, some with timber fittings. Painted rendered square-profile piers with stepped caps having double-leaf cast-iron gates in painted rendered boundary walls with metal railings.

Douglas House is notable for its very wide pediment. The austerity of the building is offset by the ornate oculus to the pediment and, in keeping with Georgian classical architecture, ornamentation is restricted to the doorway, which has a simple surround comprising a render cornice and flanking pilasters. The outbuilding is well designed with ornate chimneystack, and provides context to the site.
