Douglas Gerrard was born in County Dublin, Ireland on 12 August 1891, then crossed the Atlantic to become a leading man in more than 110 American films before dying in Hollywood in 1950. He acted in silent pictures such as The Merchant of Venice and The Quicksands, directed twenty-three movies between 1916 and 1920, and shared a stage life with his brother Charles K. Gerrard. A boy from Dublin became a familiar face in American cinema, carrying Irish stubbornness into kitchens, lighthouses and spy rooms across the screen.
