Doona Fort

Small oval area (23.6m N-S; 13m E-W) barely projecting N into Dunmanus Bay. Neck defended by earthen bank (H 5.2m) with external fosse (D 2.65m). Westropp (1915, 283) noted a dry stone revetment to bank which is no longer visible. Bank and fosse crossed by causeway (Wth 2m) to S. Interior shown as circular area on OS 6-inch map (1842); now reduced in size to less than half that area. Westropp (1915, 284) noted collapsed Man-made underground passage (CO130-024002-) 'close to the dangerous edge'.
