Donal McCann was born in Terenure, County Dublin, in 1943, the son of a playwright and twice-Lord Mayor. He grew up inside the machinery of Irish theatre, playing Cuchulainn at nineteen and later giving Frank Hardy in Faith Healer a body so complete that Friel called it deeply spiritual. The streets of Dublin did not merely witness him; they rehearsed him.
