Dolforwyn Castle stands as a ruined Welsh enclosure above Abermule, built by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd between 1273 and 1277 to assert control over the Severn Valley. The stone platform hewn from the ridge held a rectangular keep and circular tower until English forces besieged it in 1277. The occupants surrendered on 8 April because they ran out of water, exposing a fatal flaw in the design that later helped bring Master James of Saint George to Wales.

Dolforwyn Castle was built by Llywelyn the Great, ruler of Gwynedd, in the early 13th century, around 1220–1230, as part of his efforts to consolidate power in central Wales. It is remembered as a key defensive and administrative stronghold in the Welsh Marches and is associated with the later siege of 1245 during the conflict between Llywelyn's grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, and the English.
