Designed landscape, belvedere

What is recorded here

Mountrivers holds a two-storey stone belvedere beside Coolcraheen House, built during the estate era when landlords shaped Cork landscapes into deliberate scenery. Its crude cantilevered stairs climb a wall to the first-floor door, suggesting a private view rather than a grand public monument. The tower still points toward the slope and distance, preserving the intention of a household that wanted its land seen as composition instead of accident.
Two-storey square tower (H c. 5m) on S-facing slope in grounds of Coolcraheen House. Crude cantileavered stairs in stone wall up to 1st-floor door of tower. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
